China’s time? Growing confidence of the People’s Liberation Army in an uncertain international security context
MERICS Lunch Talk with Dr. Bastian Giegerich and Ms. Meia Nouwens from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)
Bastian Giegerich, Director of the Defence and Military Analysis Programme at the IISS, will discuss major trends in global defense based on the 2018 Edition of The Military Balance, an influential IISS assessment of global security trends published annually since 1959. The worldwide security landscape remains challenged and uncertain: from continued threats of terrorism, to persistent regional conflicts, the rising specter of great-power conflict, and the West’s eroding defence technological edge.
Meia Nouwens, Research Fellow for Chinese Defence Policy and Military Modernisation, will briefly outline the top three trends seen in Chinese defense policy and PLA modernization efforts in 2017. She will highlight key innovations in China’s defense industry, progress made in modernization of the PLA, and will place the PLA’s new capabilities in the context of international security.
IISS and MERICS have recently started a collaboration to analyze China’s developing role as a global security actor. The China Security Project monitors, among others, China’s defense and security policy, diplomatic initiatives, military operations, as well as the domestic drivers of Beijing’s policies through a tracking project published biannually, in-depth analyses and public events.
Dr. Giegerich’s and Ms. Nouwens’ talks will be followed by a brief discussion moderated by Helena Legarda and a Q&A session. Ms. Legarda is a research associate at MERICS and co-author of the China Security Project.
